Living Through Disaster
May. 7th, 2010 10:58 pmNashville, Tennessee has experienced catastrophic floods. It started raining last Friday night and didn't stop until early Monday morning. A "Thousand Year Storm" they're calling it. Almost a week later, part of downtown Nashville is without power, we have one functioning water treatment plant, some counties are still without power, etc etc. And Mother Nature didn't care if you're a celebrity or not-- she destroyed or damaged the homes of some of the famous folk too. Even Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman had a flooded basement. Julie Roberts (the country singer) had to be rescued by boat from the second story of her house. She said she and her family watched their three cars just float away...The disaster stories just go on and on.
And yes, my neighborhood was one of the hardest hit. In addition to the high water, a flash flood went down my apartment complex's road. One of our residents was swept away right at the back entrance of the complex. They found his body half a mile away on what is left of the miniature golf course. That same flash flood swept part of one of the schools on my road onto a nearby interstate, wiped out a church, parts of two schools, the miniature golf course, etc. Not to mention the assorted cars that got swept away. The complex itself was okay because the buildings are on high ground, but from Saturday afternoon until about noon on Sunday, you couldn't get in or out of the complex. We didn't have power from Saturday until late Monday morning.
When the floods became serious that Saturday, I was in Lewisburg hauling a car load of stuff to my new house (about 45 miles south of Nashville). I had to get back to my apartment because my dogs were there. It took me 2.5 hours to go 45 miles, and I did some really stupid things like driving through whitecapped flood water and over the top of a downed tree on a flooded bridge. But by god, I was not leaving my dogs locked in their crates in the apartment. My poor Honda-- but bless it's heart, it got me home.
